Cloverfield
Watched January 17th, 2008Watched Cloverfield tonight. Before I spoil my fresh impression of the movie by absorbing internet opinions, reviews and criticisms, let me just say first off that I really enjoyed the movie. I think the thing I liked most is that for a survival/horror/monster movie, it actually didn’t use stupid, pedestrian directing techniques to generate cheap scares. You know the type, where the booming background soundtrack would cease, the camera zooms close over near/over the protagonist’s shoulder, all you could hear is his/her heavy breathing in a dark environment, then moments later (length of such “suspenseful” moments proportional to how much of a douchebag the director is), BOOM, some creature launches it/his/herself at the protagonist, the background music floods in and the audience is startled. It’s amazing how much I hate that.
Cloverfield doesn’t have such bullshit because it doesn’t have background music as its completely filmed in first person. Speaking of first person perspective, I was a little iffy about the whole shaky handheld camera style, having seen the dizzying lameness that was The Blair Witch Project. However, Cloverfield isn’t much hindered by it, though sometimes, I guess for realism sakes, the camera does swing to an alarming degree.
I guess the only minor gripe I have about the movie is that I do want to know more about the… thing that caused so much havoc and the movie doesn’t really provide for it. Of course the point of the movie ISN’T about the thing but about the people who are trying to survive but still, a tad unfulfilling in that respect. Other than that, the movie was enjoyably suspenseful and scary throughout.

I’ve never even heard of Cloverfield :S
A film like that would probably give me nightmares for months.
Huh. For some reason I’m intrigued by Cloverfield, even if I don’t normally care for monster movie kind of things. It seems so similar to what’s already out there and yet it’s still being made and marketed. It’s gotta have something to draw attention then, right? I guess I’m more ambivalent on whether or not I’d like it if I saw it. Which I probably won’t, given my infrequency of movie theatre visits.
I’m totally a sucker for a viral marketing mystery so, yeah, goin’ to try and drag Mat along to see this.
Also: I think I must be about the only person in the universe who liked The Blair Witch Project. I thought it was clever, though I did see it a couple of years after its hype had died down, and I wasn’t expecting much, which probably helped.
I admire The Blair Witch Project for having the highest cost-to-profit ratio in cinema history. That is very respectable.
Oh man I love the guys who do Lost. I really want to see Cloverfield bad. Hopefully, I can convince someone to go with me this weekend.
Awesome .. I’ve been looking up reviews and info for this film, and it seems to be getting pretty solid ratings. And it’s really interesting that they’re promoting the film with the fallen Statue of Liberty..it definitely sets an undertone of the America being attacked..Maxim actually did a little bit on it.

I heard that this movie was basically protraying a crafty american version of Godzilla… an actual american monster now that is not associated with Godzilla.
Glad you enjoyed the movie… I think I’ll be waiting until it’s out on DVD before I watch this…
I’ve been debating as to whether or not go see Cloverfield because of the first person camera… Blair Witch project made me feel sick. Lol. But so far I’m intrigued.
I always figured by the previews that it was one of those really crappy movies hiding behind a very mysterious trailer - it makes you want to go see it because you really don’t know what it’s about, but when you actually DO see it… it sucks.
However, everyone I’ve talked to seems to have enjoyed it, so maybe my theory was wrong.
I didn’t watch the movie but some people were looking up how the monster thing looked like on Google the other day and I saw it. It’s very… interesting lol. Those aren’t mine kind of movies but I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Wow. Every blog I’ve read so far has given Cloverfield good reviews. I’m wary of watching it, though. I remember feeling all icky and nauseated after Blair Witch (my best friend actually threw up).
