The Simpsons Movie
Watched July 28th, 2007Watched it yesterday (well, technically two days ago) and it was way, WAY better than I expected! Having seen the trailers, I was incredibly put off by the seemingly over-the-top, slapstick, low-brow humour that made up the entire trailer (e.g. with the wrecking ball… did he NEED to swing between the rock and A Hard Place so many times? I think we get the joke!), and so I had low expectations for the movie.
But fortunately, I was proven wrong! The trailers, in my opinion, featured the least funny of the jokes in the movie. There’s plenty of wit and subtle humour in the actual film, my favourite scenes being the one with Homer and his “chainsaw” and the sequence of naked Bart on his skateboard. There were also a number of touching moments too. I do recommend people go see the movie. To me, it’s a win-win; if you hated the trailer, you might still enjoy the movie, if you liked the trailer, you would most likely enjoy the movie. It was a solid and entertaining film.
What I *didn’t* expect was a whole chunk of the credits going entirely to Korean people… they were the animators. Also, if you’re going to see the film, don’t leave straight after, there’s a silly “Simpsons anthem” towards the end of it.

Are you.. recommending, that silly anthem? Because I wouldn’t.
Well… not necessarily, but in case people want to get their money’s worth of “Simpsons”ness… :P Some people might like it!
Ehhh … I don’t really like The Simpsons. I might just be the only person in the world who doesn’t. TV just turns me off … unless it’s House …
IIRC, the animation studio is Rough Draft. They’re also the people who do Futurama (and one of my favourite comic-to-cartoon adaptations of all time: The Maxx).
The company is Californian, but they have a sweatshop of animators in Korea. This used to be pretty common Back In The Day when all cartoons were done the ‘traditional’ way; go watch any old cartoon from the ’80s or early ’90s and the credits will almost certainly be stuffed with Asian names (though Disney actually had one of its animation sweatshops in Sydney for a while). The Simpsons occasionally makes in-jokes about this; usually on episodes dealing with Itchy & Scratchy.
Nowadays, a lot of animation is done using skeleton-based vector graphics software (a little like Flash, only a zillion times more complex and specifically designed to look like cell animation), so the huge sweatshops are slightly less common than they were I think.
lol I loved the trailer, still haven’t seen the movie yet.
Some people say they don’t like it and such, I believe everyone has their own taste and opinion, some like Harry Potter, some don’t. ;)
Your description of the movie is making me shake from excitement for watching the movie! :)
I’m really not a Simpsons fan…the show has been going on for so long and really isn’t funny anymore. There are so many better shows like it on TV, ie Family Guy, South Park, Futurama. But, I have been hearing really good stuff about this movie so I’ll probably go see it.
The marketing team went absolutely crazy. It was waaayyy over-the-top.
I really enjoyed the Simpsons movie! I thought it was well done.
