Widgets
Musings, Online July 26th, 2007Is it just me or are “widgets” the new “in thing” online? I seem to be seeing it everywhere; people talk about adding widgets to wordpress, sites that offer widgets and such. Instead of just adding extra script into your blog (in the form of plugins) you can link to third party scripts on your blog as well! I find it a little ironic that in our web 2.0 age, where the focus is on minimalism and simplicity, there appears to be more and more gadgets available to clutter up one’s (online) life.
I still read everyone’s blog posts everyone! I’ve just been lurking more than commenting. New uni semester starts back on Monday, I’m trying milk the holidays for all its worth. I hope “Intellectual Property” is as interesting as it sounds!
Edit: I’m actually not all that sure what a “widget” is either, but here’s what wiki says about it. I think the most helpful line is,
“The [widget] code brings in ‘live’ content – advertisements, links, images – from a third party site without the web site owner having to update.”

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I still don’t get what widgets ARE.
Lurking is fun. :D Commenting is haaaard.
Ditto Stephanie. WTF are widgets?
Considering that I have accounts at Last.FM, IMDb, LiveJournal, Flickr, Virb, et al, “widgets” have their uses, but I do agree that they have a curious tendency to clutter instead of organize websites..
Me third. I don’t know what a widget is. I’ve seen them around, but I just avoid them, because I’m an old-fashioned kinda guy.
A widget? Erm … I don’t think I use any. *considers* Actually, come to think of it, my blog is plain, lacking these widgets. I tend not to mind them, but I have noticed them everywhere and I agree - it is the new thing. I laugh at the irony. *laughs*
Lol thank you for enlightening me. I never understood what those are.
It’s true what you say… They end up cluttering our “lives” instead of making them simpler. I honestly don’t understand why people use some of them. Do they actually think people pay attention to their scores here and there? Hmmm, no.
I’ve heard mention of ‘widget ready’ or ‘widget compatible’ themes and I have no idea what they are. So I just ignore it and continue as normal.
I think that I have several widgets on my site. Last.fm & such but, there are far too many of them. Ah~ The internet is getting too complicated. I remember when everyone had a site on geocities.com, didn’t use CSS (because it didn’t exist?), &c.
But, IP! I am so jealous. I want to go law school~ OMG! Good luck with the new semester.
