“What are you sniggering at?”
Musings, Online, Uni April 3rd, 2007For those who have attended or is attending university/college, does anyone find it a little annoying when if someone’s phone goes off in class (or even a lecture), there’s bound to be at LEAST one person there who’d snicker at it? This is even it’s not because of a funny ring tone or anything. It’s already automatically embarrassing for the person with the ringing phone, especially if they have to frantically dig it out of their bag to stop the ringing, and with the lecturer/tutor staring at them disapprovingly, but is that actually funny? It might be different in a high school environment (at least mine) where ringing phones are rarer and treated with harsher penalties, where an unexpected ringing phone might trigger a laugh or two, but in Uni?
10 points for whoever can pinpoint who I’m quoting in the post title, without using google.
All the good WPRs are gone (only a couple left) and there are no good ones. I have no idea how active yoursite is since the reviews don’t have dates on them. What do you guys think if I set up some kind of informal reviewing/feedback section as an addon to this site? Or are WPRs just not good ideas anymore?

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I encourage you to tack a mini-WPR onto your site. You seem honest and critical, but not to the point of being acerbic. It would be a pleasant aberration in the WPR scene.
I never snicker at ringing cellphones, but I automatically lose respect for the person. This is easy to do because I have never owned a cellphone.
I live in the Stone Age.
I don’t snicker at ringing cellphones unless the ringtone is hilarious - like someone’s went off one time in my Chinese class and it was the Star Trek theme. Fantastic! It actually was a good conversation starter for after class.
But I digress. It is really annoying when people childishly laugh at ringing cell phones in class. Like, really annoying.
I don’t like webpage reviews, myself. But I suppose if you wanted to have one, you should go ahead and get one. :)
I hate it when a phone goes off in class, but I have to admit I laugh at people when it happens - mostly because I’m of the (somewhat harsh) opinion that if someone left their phone on in class, they deserve a little humiliation for the interruption. But I admit that I can be mean and childish :(
I never got into the whole review thing, but I don’t think that it would be a bad idea. I think a lot of people would appreciate it.
OH! OH! OH! MY FAIR LADY! The minute I saw that title something went off in my head and little sparks flew about. What a fantastic film; pure genius on every level. (I really hope that was in fact the reference, otherwise I’d be in a rather embarassing situation.)
I guess I don’t qualify yet to respond to the cell phone comment, but as for the WPR idea (oh wow, it’s been ages since I’ve used that acronym), I think it’d be lovely. You’re critical, but you’re so respectful about it, and your opinions in general tend to be very mature, objective, and open-minded… you’d definitely do a great job. Personally, though, I find that reviewing always starts out as a thrill and then slowly morphs into a burden… but depending on how you set it up, that may not be a problem for you.
To Tiffany: BINGO! 10 points to you as well as an e-basket of e-cookies. :P My Fair Lady is possibly my favouritest movie, I just adore the songs in it (as well as the characters and costumes)! <3<3
We’re a pretty small tightly knit class (only 14 students) so if someone’s phone rings no one bats an eyelash. What’s ironic is that it’s our professor’s phone is the one that usually goes off. :P
I think a review section would be a neat idea. WPRs only seem to sprout like mushrooms during the summer vacation and then they slowly died down again when the owners return to school. It’s a cycle. Actually, I’ve been thinking of putting up a small review section on my site (Excuse for visitor content) but I am being lazy on fleshing out the details.
Yoursite is not really active… I mean not compared to how it was when Linda managed it. It shows that the new owner lets things go… spammers gallore… not to mention that most visitors just post 3 reviews to be able to post their own site. It shows. They’re not constructive… AT ALL.
There are 2 WPRs that I find really good: Captious Pedants (unfortunately they don’t review all applicants) and Natural Anthem. Oh and also Petshopgirls Reviews is brilliant, though I believe that she doesn’t review coding. Out of these Captious Pedants is by far the best, but the other two are also extremely good ones.
Generally speaking, most WPRs are crap these days. *sighs* If I weren’t so lazy, I’d open my own. However I take eons with the ones I promised on yoursite (right now I only have one request left, but the site’s so ugly I can’t convince myself to start it :P )
I’ve been in many classes out of high school, such as through university programs where it’s basically a college environment. When a phone goes off, people usually don’t snicker. We just hear the person who owns the phone go, “Damn.” Then shut it off. But no more than that. If people ever do snicker, it’s more like a group of people (including me) who chuckles over the funny ring tone.
I think it depends on the specific people in the classrooms.
