Why “bitchery” =/= “opinionated”: A Case Study
Musings, Online, Rants November 19th, 2006Reference: Acerbic Bitches
Apparently this “web commentary” dedicates itself to “Making You Feel Bad About Yourself”. No really, I’m not joking, that’s what it actually reads. Anyway, in the attempt to do this, there are many articles written that basically flames websites that are generally from the graphics-making community.
For a random example, let’s consider their article on website tips. While most of the “tips” given were intuitive and practical to do with readability and browser sizes etc, look at #10. How is “I don’t like bright colours” even considered a tip and not PURELY a personal opinion? I weren’t able to pick up how such a statement can be generalised to most people in any way. And people who can’t do what they PERSONALLY like should “leave the community”?
The site is otherwise filled with random insults like “idiot”, “chimp” and just general controversial entries about one graphics site owner stalking another etc etc. How does any of that even fall under the banner of “web commentary”? And it’s sad because there are some things said in many of the articles that do have a point but the presentation just downgrades everything they say to having the vibe of immature 12-year-olds who just discovered that “bitch” is loosely associated with “speaking your mind” and so ran full speed with it.
Because you know what, “bitch” doesn’t equal “opinionated”. People like Jem and Kudarania are opinionated and it never once crossed my mind to associate them with being “bitchy”. Why? Because they are reasonable, if they have something controversial to say, they’d say it, but back it up with reason.
However, to be a “bitch”, in one sense, suggest that said person is whiny/irritating (i.e. note the use of the word “bitching”) and how is that EVER a positive thing? To say something deliberately offensive, without a good reason (like suggesting that people should leave a community because they don’t blend right) IS bitching but it’s NOT a good thing. What is the reason behind “making people feel bad” (presumably for the sake of it) if not as a show of outright immaturity? How does that not reek of “we’re better than you because we say so”? Helloooo, primary school mentality.
This doesn’t apply exclusively to Acerbic Bitches, I’ve seen (with much irritation) how some personal sites have owners proudly parading the fact that they are “bitches”. That’s a SUCKY fact, not a good one. It doesn’t make you any better than those who don’t “state their minds” if all you do is say whatever you feel like, whether negative or positive, without having sound backing to it. Once you do have an actual rational and logical argument behind what you say, please pass go and collect $200 (and… start building houses of reason?) as you have reached the realm of “opinionated”.
Note: Please don’t throw me the line “if you don’t like it, just leave it then” because (as attributed to having been stated by Edmund Burke) “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” and I think more people need to view their site while critically thinking about what “bitching” is. Besides, as I said, their site isn’t totally without merit, it’s just a shame that under the heinous label of “bitches” they felt they did not need to provide more sound reasoning to what they say.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I closed the window after the second nav click.
I can’t stand idiot sites like that.
Oh, them. I’ve been there before. Then got bored when I realised that I didn’t know any of the people they were referring to, so I wandered off somewhere else.
Anyway, yay, rant!
Those sites irritate me. All rant and no blog.
I only agree to the comment: “if you don’t like it, just leave it then†just a little. But other than that, webmasters should respect their visitors, and that certainly is not respectful. Another thing that doesn’t process thoroughly in my head is the (c) symbol at the bottom of a page. Figure that one out!
I completely agree with you. Being a “bitch” is NOT something someone should be proud of. It is a bad thing, just like calling someone a bastard is a bad thing. I don’t understand where this connotation of “bitch” being a good thing came about, but I wish it would stop.
I commend you for stepping forward and talking about this. There are too many “if you don’t like it, then leave” comments around. If we don’t do anything when we see injustice being done, then how will anything in this world improve?
People need to learn what being polite means really and truly, and be more sensitive to other’s feelings. Just because one can’t see the other person doesn’t mean one can say what one wants. And if someone says, “This hurts me,” people need to stop saying, “You don’t know how to take criticism.”
They seem to have some really good points, but with the way they present themselves, I’m surprised people actually take them seriously. :/ The saddest part is some even kiss-up to the people behind that site.
A complaint *can* be sent to the host (not the owner of the domain, the actual host) as it mostly contains a form of “slander” and few webhosts are happy about it, though they normally stay out of it unless it gets too out of hand (or receive enough complaints).
This site was also posted about at DDG MB, and I firmly stayed away from commenting on it too much as I don’t really think it’s worth my time.
It is true that I have myself made commentary about other peoples sites and alike, but I never made a list of “people I must bother because I don’t like them”.
Personally, I’m just glad I escaped the attention as I don’t think I’d be able to keep my hands to myself and write a few complaints to the webhost to have it shut down.
But who am I do deprive small children of their precious shiny toys?
They’ll be tired of it eventually as they stop getting attention for their slanderous words. Just wait and see.
To Phillip: I just personally hold to heart the idea that if it’s published to the open public it’s on the table for criticism by anyone. :P
To Maja: I wouldn’t think that constitutes slanders, not legally anyway as the wording is arguably too mild to be reasonably terribly offence. I’m all for the freedom of speech, of others and myself. They’re welcome to make a fool of themselves, I’m entitled to point their follies out.
The “list of people to bother” is a real eye opener, furthermore goes to show their immaturity. I think they are getting a lot less attention than they probably wanted though. Many webmasters whom they criticised seemed to have remained calm and reasonable in dealing with the matter.
It appears so. Miko from Blinding Light is on that list and I have so far seen no reaction whatsoever from her. I personally find that a very smart move. If they can’t get a reaction from her, they’ll just move on to the next poor thing in line.
True it’s not “slander” in the most common sense. But it’s still possible to make contact to host and say “These people have written these things about me and linked me directly. I wish to have this removed” and claim he or she feels “harassed” because of it. (Groupies wanting to join in whatever).
This would then be against Hostprestige.com’s terms of service and would then have to either issue a warning and have contents removed, or shut the domain down.
Drastic, and usually unecessary as sites like these never really last very long. Wasn’t there a forum where everybody bitched at eachother? Still there? No one cares…
I couldn’t agree with you more. Bitch never had a positive connotation, and I feel that one can be opinionated and not be a bitch. So, you are right! Bitch ≠Opinionated.
You would think that a site run by people so high and mighty would be better developed. I think I hit three 404 errors while trying to look around - one of them right off the nav bar at the top.
The first link just sickened me. I don’t even understand the purpose of having a site like that. I think people are just trying to stroke their own egos by putting down others.
And yes, opinionated does NOT equal bitch. I think they need to get that through their heads.
To me, the most off-putting, unattractive, contemptible thing to see in a website is not bad design, or bad coding, or even bad content.
It’s arrogance. Arrogance just completely debases the value of anything good in a website. How can I respect something, regardless of whether it’s respectable or not, if I know that it’s coming from the mind of someone whose brain will probably explode one day because they are so full of themselves?
Especially now that I’m no longer really a member of this online society, the excessive self-love that people develop just because they can make an attractive website and garner the respect of people they don’t really know who can’t make such nice websites… seems rather ridiculous.
=/
Sorry, my comment was not altogether relevant to your post.
In fact, it was not very relevant at all.
Well, it’s related, if somewhat abstractly. Your post inspired the sentiments. =)
I’m glad you don’t think I’m a bitch.. can think of a few people that’d disagree mind. ;) Not my fault that some people just cannot handle the truth (and that’s the real truth, not made-up truth to sound controversial).
Wow, yes, I really like what you’re saying here. I have had experience with people just randomly being rude and trying to “throw me out of the community”. I learned a lesson when I applied to get my site reviewed and this person said what they though t, yes, but they went out of their way to make me feel bad… They butchered me with words. Now I wanted a review and the truth but I didn’t need them over exaggerating the truth. I of course am over it and try my best to not even worry about what others think.
Anyways, I really enjoyed reading your article. It was nice reading something intelligent.
I visited their site and wow they’re arrogant. I don’t know what kind of satisfaction they’re getting from bitching. I don’t even assume that they would like to give some constructive feedback, after all their motto is “Making You Feel Bad About Yourselfâ€. That site bores me (and makes sick too) cos it seems they really don’t have better things to do.
It’s great to have opinions negative or positive ones but reasonable arguments are also important as is your attitude (being only rude won’t take you anywhere). So I agree with you “bitch” and “opionated” has nothing common.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. I live by the saying; but I don’t consider what you mentioned above as “evil”, more along the line of… “different”, in a way that I don’t understand. Many of those who called themselves “bitches” are really just joking about it. I guess I’m too nice and optimistic, or simply haven’t seen it all, huh.
I bitch. But only when it actually is a baseless opinion. Or a very personal one (such as my disdain for “emos”) that isn’t based on anything more than personal taste. Though I tend to attack them more for being “poseurs” than anything else. I guess that in itself is bad since it means I’m very close-minded, but if they’re going to purposely associate themselves with a label, why not attack them for it when they don’t live up to it?
Ah well, I got off point. I’m a bitch. Though I’m not sure I really intend to be… most of the time…
I totally agree with your entry. I hate it when some site owners go around parading the fact that they are a bitch and they are totally proud of that fact. It’s definitely not a positive thing yet they feel it’s soooo “cool”. I can’t stand that site (AB). I closed it after reading a few sentences. Eurgh! -.-”
Lol, what a load of crap with those tips. Especially 10 indeed. Now I don’t like flashy layouts either, but I’m not exactly a fan of monochrome/grey ones either. But okay, I could go on and on about my reactions to that thing, doesn’t make you feel better so why bother =p
And yea, I hate the ‘bitches’ too. If I see something like that, I’m closing the site immediatly lol.
