The Defence Rests

Musings 16 Comments »

Mm more late night musings.

Maybe I’m just being biased here, but do you find it that it’s more common place to call people “defensive” than it is to call someone “accusatory”? Why is that when arguments arise, it seems oddly acceptable for the complainant to use the “you’re just being defensive!” to dismiss everything you might say in reply to the accusation? Why is it almost seeming that once someone has thrown down the gauntlet and pointed the finger at some heinous crime that they alleged you did, that you’re seemingly instantly guilty of it, and that anything you say in response to that is seen as “defensive” AS IF THAT’S A BAD THING? What happened to a fair hearing in the realm of social interactions?

Imagine this:

Prosecutor: JURY! This… PERSON here has done something terrible! *proceeds to lay out reasons*
Jury: *after some murmurring* That’s it! We pronounce the alleged offender, GUILTY!
Alleged offender: Wait! Can’t I say something in defence?
Prosecutor: SEE?! THEY’RE BEING DEFENSIVE!! That makes them twice as guilty!
Jury: We pronounce the alleged offender DOUBLE GUILTY!
Judge: *bangs gravel* DONE! The offender will serve DOUBLE the sentence for DARING to try to defend themselves!

Gee, I wouldn’t want to live under THAT legal system.

I’m not saying that what defence may be given is a good one. But if people legally have the RIGHT to offer their side of the story (whether it be a weak or strong argument) why don’t they get the same right socially? Why did “being defensive” ended up turning out to be some sort of incriminating practice unto itself, so that ANYTHING you might say in your defence is thrown out simply because you’re “being defensive”?

Next time you accuse, consider that you exercising that right automatically means that the person you’re accusing has the same right of rebuttal. If you’re going to accuse someone then go “BLAH BLAH NOT LISTENING BECAUSE YOU’RE BEING DEFENSIVE” then you’re at best acting like a 5-year-old and at worse acting like some sort of zealous lyncher. And really, who takes the opinion of those people seriously?

P.S. First “Toybox” page up! I hope you guys would at least look at (and maybe comment on) the Six-Word Story.

P.P.S. Join Duskglow! And Machine while you’re at it. New forums deserve lots of love. <3

My ulcer from the picture before has almost totally healed and it stopped hurting about a week ago. Non-pain is absolutely sweet compared to agony. :P

I know it’s all over the internet now, but I want to bring attention to a video posted by Shorelle a few days ago regarding the Dove Evolution. No, it’s not a documentary about birds, but a really insightful, quick and surprising look at how easily and extensively “model” pictures are touched up. It really goes to prove that not only can anyone look conventionally “beautiful” with the right makeup, lightning and graphics program, but how in the end it doesn’t actually look like you but just some creature that has been rendered to look as societially “pleasing” as possible. Scarily enough, the end result of that video isn’t even a photo of a terribly made up woman, just a quick flick of many womens’ magazines reveal ads of even more alien, airbrushed and fake-looking models. I don’t mind looking at pretty pictures of models (whether real, drawn or CGI) but it’s disconcerting and sad when people strive to look like something that, in reality, doesn’t normally start off looking like that in nature.

Anyway, I was going to register the free domain name that comes with my dreamhost package for a friend but now he’s registered for his own package and domain name. So what can I do with the extra name? Should I splurge and get something I probably won’t renew next year? What’s the point? Maybe I can make a competition and have that as the prize. Speaking of domain names, remember kids, for those who are going to register a name, DON’T USE WHOIS to search for availability unless you’re going to register the name straight away. I’ve repeatedly heard cases of people searching for a name then days later to have the originally freed up name taken by those domain hoarding companies that makes you pay heaps to buy the name from them.

I’ve updated the “extras” section with a page of forums and non-forum activities I have and do participate in. Hmmm no wonder I spend so much time online. :P

Oh and before I go, today’s Newground’s top submission is a cute little flash movie about online dating called Less Than Three. While nothing too wowing, it’s sugary cute and the song is catchy. “~Let’s meet here on IRC, LOLOL~”. :D

First up, some housekeeping. Spin has been updated after months of neglect. Enjoy downloading stuff. I’ve added a new page (finally!) to the “About” section, just something I wrote at work about what I envision to be my home when one day move out. I hope to update the other sections more later.

Now to the content of this post! I cleared the photos out from my phone in a desperate, last-minute bout of procrastinating from impending essays that need to be written, and here’s a few worth talking about. These are all taken from my crappy camera phone as I don’t have a digital camera, so excuse the crappy quality.

For some reason I already found these two uploaded, so I’m not sure whether I’ve talked about them or not… well anyway the is an “origami tower” I folded a few months ago. It now houses my beads and beading wires/threads. I have the pdf somewhere on my computer, I’ll upload that when I find it. Useful to store small, light things.

I call this my Patch o’ Progress, aka what I’ve been doing to practice my stitches. You can see the progession from single sitches on the bottom to doubles at the top. Lots of missing stitches as I fumbled along, but it’s better now. My mum says that I should stop wasting yarn and just get on with making something useful so it seems to be the end for PoP. =/

This was my WTF of the day on 25th May this year. I was at the shopping centre and I saw this Asian lady sitting with a trolley with only a big sign saying “Say NO to Communism” on it. O_o

The last photo is kinda gross so I put it behind a cut. I’m currently in a huge amount of pain cos of an ulcer I have on the inner part of my lip, thanks a lot, braces! >:( I’ve got a picture to prove it and everything!
