Irony
Literary, Music, Rants May 3rd, 2006I love comedy in all its forms and it irks me when I see people use the term “irony” in the wrong way. My favourite meaning of the word is:
“Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs”
Getting to school late on the day when you’re supposed to hand in an essay, and the car broke down; that is not irony, that’s a misfortune.
Seeing a random dog walks by and it looks sadly at you after you left your house without patting your own dog before you left, that’s not irony, that’s a coincidence.
Criticising someone’s grammar or spelling being bad when the person is talking vehemently about, say, animal rights, is not ironic, that’s grammar nazi-ing (though it would be ironic if you criticise someone’s topic on grammar and spelling when the post contains terrible grammar and spelling. I think the best example is when people rave on about how people have bad “grammer” :P).
Which makes me sad that the only (popular) song called “Ironic” by Alanis Morisette… doesn’t have an ounce of irony in any of the examples that it gives! From the first stanza:
“An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day”
That’s not irony! What WOULD be ironic was if (for example) the old man had cheated the lottery ticket from another person by killing them, then before he could claim the money, he died.
“It’s a traffic jam when you’re already late
It’s a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break”
That is also a misfortune! Again, the situation would actually be ironic if (for example) you are the traffic conductor who coordinated the traffic lights to be green so you can go, but you had made the situation worse by having done that. There’s almost something karmic about irony. All the examples she gives are tragic misfortunes and not actually ironic in any way, even though she names the entire song to be about it. Isn’t THAT ironic, don’t you think?
A visual example of irony: The Tree of Irony (<3 PBF).

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I remember my grade 10 english teacher bitching about Alanis’s song as well :P
and I liked that tree comic.
I liked it very much indeed P
that P at the end was supposed to be a :P
Hehe, reminds me of K. People would sing that song…
Isn’t that ironic? Don’tcha think?
And we’d sing in response, “Nah, not really!”
Oi what’s the totoro cam for?
As you an see it’s an early morning at work and I’m not working…
Bel: xD I keep forgetting to work on it. I’m not sure if I’m even going to put something up for it, given that I possibly might change the layout and scrap the idea. Maybe.
That sounds like irony to me…. I dunno. I do know irony like Socratic, verbal, situational, and cosmic irony. XD
Bel: Ah I’m aware that there are other types of irony existing, though I haven’t looked into it myself. Perhaps what I mean is moreso the common variety of irony rather than any philosophical one.
See, all this “OMFG IT’S NOT IRONY GOSH!” outrage kind of offends me because I like that song. :/ Not a good enough reason to be offended, but that’s what happens. Anyway, I like your examples of what would be truly ironic, because they help me understand irony better. I have to admit my grasp on irony isn’t all that great. We went over it vaguely in the beginning of the year in English but, again, not enough to really get it. Which doesn’t help me at all.
Anyway! Congratulations on not waiting weeks before posting another entry. ;) I like this new entry every couple of days thing! Is it a pattern that I can look forward to? *winkwink*
Bel: Ah I like the song’s melody too (it’s on my playlist! :P) but it irks me that the very thing it proposes to talk about… isn’t being talked about. Sorry that you find it offensive though. =/
I could have sworn all her examples are irony.
She gives the example of the man who hates planes and when he finally gets on one, he dies.
Rain on your wedding day… It’s one day out of 365 and it’s the most important and it rains. XD
Bah, looking at the other examples forces me to think and I’m in no position to do so.
Bel: Hmm I dunno… it’s possible to see them as just being really bad misfortunes too.
I always thought that that was why the song was called Ironic- it’s supposed to be a song about irony, but contains barely any examples :p
Ah, yeah, irony. It IS easy to misuse, although I understand what you mean.
Haha, that’s a great picture xD I wondered the same thing when I actually figured out what irony was, and thought about the lyrics… of course, Alanis could have been going deep by making the irony the very nature of a song called “Ironic” that does not contain any actual irony. (intentional? or just grasping for examples to fit the rhyming pattern? o__O)
Bel: Mmm I’d think that describing ironic situations would take up too many words to make a good flow of a song :P It’s a lot easier to graphically represent (maybe because irony requires detailing change in situation?)
I LOVE YOU! MISS YOU!!! WE SHOULD TALK SOMEDAY!
=leaves luffles=
Rofl. I have to admit that I see your point! But I think that as time goes on, the meaning of words changes significantly… and as insulting or as stupid and is might have become, that’s lazy human interpretation for you :) But my pet gripe for words is “prerogative”. Hehe.
I find it hard to label something as ironic or not, which is why I hardly use the term. But it is incredibly annoying when people keep using words the wrong way. :P
I have my friends singing Alanis’ song as “Coincidental” now.
A number of writers out there would use the term “irony” because it sounds “grand”, not because they actually know what it means. “Ironically”, the incorrect use of “irony” would only cause misinterpretation on the readers’ side.
All right, I’m not making much sense here. *rofl*
I love her song but for the longest time I had no clue what irony was beacuse of that song. I love the rant. :)
I never understood the word. Wasn’t there a movie with the irony as the central point? Something having to do with school… @.@
Your post cleared up some of my confusion but watch me get confused again. *sigh*
Is weird that the song ironic, is not ironic at all. But is a cool song anyway lol
